Our Team

Through research-informed practice and collaboration, we explore new ways to deepen public participation and ensure our processes remain transparent, just, and continually improving for the benefit of our communities. Guided by evidence and grounded in place, our work aims to strengthen conditions that create community will, and consequently for governance to reflect that will.

We are a partnership between:

University of Hawaiʻi Social Science Research Institute (SSRI)

The SSRI conducts and supports interdisciplinary, applied research addressing critical social, behavioral, economic, and environmental issues in Hawaiʻi. Integrating approaches from community psychology, empowerment, and procedural justice, SSRI is helping document this process transparently — so our community can continue improving engagement methods into the future.

Teran James Young Foundation

We are a nonprofit located in Maui focused on creating Peace and Sustainability programs.

Additionally, we collaborate with organizations dedicated to community well-being and empowerment:

  • Computational Democracy Project
Envisions a world where governance better reflects public will. They have developed Pol.is, a consensus-building tool developed with the goal of bringing deliberative democracy to scale through data science.
  • Maui Tomorrow Foundation
Since 1989, Maui Tomorrow has worked to protect Maui’s future by preserving the island’s natural and cultural resources and promoting ecologically sound, community-driven development. Through education, advocacy, and engagement, the Foundation empowers residents to help shape a sustainable and resilient Maui. Maui Tomorrow also authored the 2020 Maui Island Plan (MIP) Indicator Report for Maui County, which reviews 36 indicators of Quality of Life.
